Cast Resin vs VPI: Technical Deep-Dive

Understanding the differences to choose the right technology for your application

What is Cast Resin (Epoxy) Technology?

+
Cast Resin transformers (SCB series) use vacuum-cast epoxy resin to encapsulate the windings in a solid, moisture-proof shell. The LV windings are typically made of copper/aluminum foil wound with insulating film, while HV windings use multiple layers of disc-wound coils. This creates an extremely robust unit with excellent resistance to moisture, dust, and chemical contaminants. Ideal for harsh industrial environments, coastal installations, and locations with high humidity. The epoxy shell provides Class F1 fire resistance with zero-halogen emissions.

What is VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation)?

+
VPI transformers use a different manufacturing process where pre-wound coils are placed in a vacuum chamber, air is extracted, and then polyester or epoxy varnish is impregnated under pressure. This penetrates all voids and creates excellent insulation. VPI units are generally more cost-effective, easier to repair on-site, and offer good performance in clean indoor environments. However, they may be less resistant to extreme humidity compared to fully encapsulated cast resin designs. Common in commercial buildings, data centers with controlled environments, and general industrial applications.

Which Technology Should I Choose?

+
Choose Cast Resin when: high humidity/coastal environment, chemical exposure risk, strict fire codes, critical infrastructure requiring maximum reliability. Choose VPI when: controlled indoor environment, budget-conscious projects, local serviceability is important, standard commercial/industrial applications. Our engineering team can assess your specific site conditions, load requirements, and budget to recommend the optimal solution.

Capacity Range & Voltage Ratings

+
Our dry-type transformer range covers: Capacity from 50kVA to 35MVA, HV voltage up to 35kV, LV voltage typically 0.4kV / 0.69kV / 0.8kV. Special designs available for medium voltage applications (6.6kV, 11kV, 13.8kV secondary). All units can be customized for specific frequency requirements (50Hz/60Hz) and vector groups (Dyn11, Yyn0, etc.).
